GSAP (GreenSock Animation Platform) – plugins, Webflow integration and when to use it

Definition

GSAP (GreenSock Animation Platform) is a JavaScript library for high-performance web animations. Webflow acquired GreenSock in October 2024, and since April 2025 GSAP and all its plugins have been free for everyone.

What is GSAP?

GSAP (GreenSock Animation Platform) is one of the most widely used JavaScript animation libraries on the web. It lets developers create smooth, high-performance animations that go far beyond what CSS can manage on its own.

With AI-assisted coding and GSAP, you can now create polished interactions very efficiently.

Webflow acquired GreenSock in 2024

In October 2024 Webflow acquired GreenSock – the company behind GSAP. Then, in April 2025, all the previously paid GSAP plugins (ScrollTrigger, Draggable, MorphSVG, Flip and others) became completely free for all users – not just Webflow customers. It was one of the most talked-about acquisitions in the front-end world that year.

What can GSAP do?

  • ScrollTrigger – Animate elements based on scroll position, with support for pinning and scrubbing.
  • Timeline – Chain animations in exact order with full control over timing and overlap.
  • MorphSVG – Animate SVG shapes and paths into entirely new shapes.
  • Draggable – Make elements draggable, with snapping and bounds.
  • Flip – Animate layout changes smoothly with the FLIP technique (First, Last, Invert, Play).

GSAP and Webflow

GSAP is often used in Webflow projects to build animations that need more precision and control than Webflow's Interactions panel offers. Common use cases include horizontal scrolling, scroll-driven sequence animations, SVG animations and complex page transitions.

Is GSAP the right choice for your Webflow project?

Webflow's Interactions panel covers most basic animation needs. GSAP is the right choice when you need precise control, scroll-driven effects with exact timing, or animations that involve JavaScript logic. It requires coding experience – but the result is production-quality animation that stands out.
