Agentic web development – when AI agents build and update your website

Definition

Agentic web development means AI agents independently carry out tasks on a website – such as updating content, fixing SEO problems and building new pages – based on natural-language instructions, without anyone having to work by hand in a CMS or a visual design tool.

What is agentic web development?

Agentic web development is a way of working in which AI agents are given direct access to a website and can carry out tasks autonomously – not just suggest changes, but actually make them. That sets it apart from traditional AI assistance, where a person still copies the AI's answers and pastes them into a tool by hand.

The concept relies on protocols such as MCP (Model Context Protocol), which let AI tools communicate directly with external systems. Once an AI agent is connected to a CMS such as Webflow via MCP, it can read, write and publish content from instructions like "update all product descriptions" or "find pages without a meta description and fix them".

How does agentic differ from traditional web development?

In traditional web development, the workflow is linear: a person identifies a problem, creates a ticket, and a developer or content owner logs in to the tool and makes the change by hand. Every step requires human action.

Agentic web development compresses that chain dramatically:

  • Instruction – you describe the task in natural language
  • The agent plans – the AI interprets the task and decides which steps are needed
  • The agent executes – the changes are made directly on the website with no manual step in between
  • A human reviews – you check the result and approve or adjust it

The need for human judgement stays the same. What disappears is the manual execution.

Agentic web development in practice

Letting AI agents work directly in your web environment requires a platform with a well-designed API architecture. Webflow is currently at the forefront, with accessible MCP support that enables a complete workflow: from a natural-language instruction straight through to publishing.

But it does not stop there. More complex needs – building advanced headless solutions with Sanity, say, or integrating AI agents with memory and extensive RAG systems – call for a robust architecture that can handle more than simple changes. Whether you build in a visual CMS or in code, the job is the same: giving the agent what it needs to navigate, understand and interact with your data securely.
