Claude: Anthropic's AI model for code, content and autonomous agents

Definition

Claude is a family of large language models (LLMs) developed by Anthropic, known for following complex instructions, writing and reviewing code and producing well-structured content. It is a central tool in SEOS Design's web development and content production.

What is Claude?

Claude is a family of large language models (LLMs) developed by the US AI safety company Anthropic. The models are trained with a focus on safety, reliability and the ability to follow complex instructions – qualities that make Claude AI an effective tool in professional workflows.

Claude was launched commercially in 2023 and has become one of the leading options in its segment. It is available through the API, the claude.ai web interface and Claude Code – Anthropic's agentic coding tool, available as a CLI, a desktop app (Mac and Windows), a web app and an IDE extension for VS Code and JetBrains.

Model versions – Haiku, Sonnet and Opus

The Claude family has three tiers, each with a different balance between speed and capability:

  • Claude Haiku – the fastest model, suited to simple, repetitive tasks where low latency matters.
  • Claude Sonnet – a balanced combination of speed and capability. The default choice for most professional workflows.
  • Claude Opus – the most capable, used for complex reasoning, advanced code generation and tasks that need deep context.

Anthropic updates the models regularly. As of autumn 2026, the current generation is Claude 5.5, with Opus, Sonnet and Haiku (Anthropic).

Claude Code – AI-assisted web development

Claude Code is an agentic tool available as a CLI, a desktop app (Mac and Windows), a web app (claude.ai/code) and an IDE extension for VS Code and JetBrains. Unlike an ordinary coding assistant that suggests individual lines of code, Claude Code acts on its own: it reads files, creates and edits code, runs commands and commits to Git without you having to instruct every step manually. To make Claude Code work effectively in a project, teams often use a CLAUDE.md file – a text file in the project's root directory with instructions, conventions and background information specific to that project. Claude reads the file at the start of each session and works from that context throughout. That is the difference between a generic AI tool and an assistant that actually knows the project's architecture, naming conventions and business logic.

Claude Code supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), which lets you connect external tools and data sources directly to the AI agent. SEOS Design uses Claude Code with the Webflow MCP and the Ahrefs MCP to handle CMS updates, analyse SEO data and produce updates – all from the same interface.

Claude and MCP – connecting to external tools

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that lets Claude communicate with external systems in real time – databases, APIs, CMS platforms and analytics tools – without anyone having to copy data into the conversation by hand. Claude is currently the model behind most MCP implementations in production.

In practice, a Claude agent can fetch live data from a tool, process it and write the result back – in a single workflow. SEOS Design, for example, runs the Webflow MCP and the Ahrefs MCP side by side, making it possible to analyse keyword data and update CMS content directly from Claude Code without switching tools.

MCP is also the basis for connecting autonomous AI agents to business systems. The more MCP servers an agent can access, the more it can do – without the model itself having to change.

Claude Design – an AI-driven design tool

Claude Design is a tool from Anthropic Labs that lets users create visually polished material together with Claude. It launched on 17 April 2026 and was built at the time on Claude Opus 4.7. It is available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers on claude.ai.

Claude Design reads the company's design files and codebase and applies colours, typography and components automatically. You can start from a text description, a document or source code and fine-tune layout, spacing and colour directly in the interface. The result can be exported as a URL, PDF, PowerPoint or HTML file, or sent on to Canva.

The tool is aimed at designers, product managers and marketers who want to shorten the time from idea to finished design – without leaving the AI workflow.

Why Claude suits web development and content production

Claude stands out in workflows that demand long context and precise instructions – both central to web development projects. The model can keep large amounts of code, structural documentation and style rules in memory while producing consistent output.

In SEO and AEO, Claude is used to produce semantically structured content optimised for citation by AI. Semantic chunking, E-E-A-T signals and FAQ structure can be built systematically into content production when a well-configured AI agent drives the workflow.

Claude and AI agents

Claude is one of the most widely used underlying models for building autonomous AI agents. Through Anthropic's API, Claude can be connected to tools, databases and external services and act on the user's behalf in complex multi-step processes – without human intervention at every step.

SEOS Design's sister brand AI Partner specialises in building AI agents, RAG systems and automations with Claude at the core – for companies that want to automate business processes and manage internal knowledge efficiently.
