Google Gemini – how Google's AI affects your visibility in search

Definition

Gemini is Google's family of multimodal AI models and the name of the company's AI assistant. Gemini also powers the AI answers in Google Search – both AI Overviews and AI Mode – making the model decisive for how companies appear in Google's results in 2026.

What is Google Gemini?

Gemini is Google's family of multimodal AI models and the name of Google's AI assistant (the successor to Bard). The models handle text, images, audio, video and code, and are available both as a standalone assistant at gemini.google.com and built into Google Workspace and Android. Gemini is also the engine behind Google's AI answers in search.

Gemini in Swedish

Gemini works fully in Swedish and is available in Sweden – both at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app. You can ask questions and get answers in Swedish, and AI Overviews are also shown for Swedish searches. In other words, Google's AI answers are already part of how Swedish buyers search.

Which Gemini models are available in 2026?

Gemini comes in several variants optimised for different needs. At Google I/O in May 2026, Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default model in AI Mode and in the Gemini app worldwide (Google). Since then Google has released newer Flash models (3.6, 3.7 and 3.8) and, in October 2026, the new flagship Gemini 4 Argon, which anyone with Google AI Pro or Ultra can choose in the app and in AI Mode (Google). Anyone using the Gemini app without signing in currently gets Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite – signing in unlocks more models, and the largest require a subscription. Google also has Gemini Omni, a model that takes text, images, audio and video as input and currently generates video (Google).

Gemini vs ChatGPT – what is the difference?

The biggest difference is the ecosystem. Gemini is built into Google's products – Search, Workspace and Android – while ChatGPT from OpenAI is a standalone AI assistant. If you already work in Google's tools, you get Gemini directly in Gmail, Docs and the search results. ChatGPT, by contrast, is accessed through its own app and web interface.

Which one is stronger depends on the use case. Gemini has the edge when the task relies on up-to-date search data or documents in Google's ecosystem. ChatGPT is often the first choice as a general, standalone assistant with a large range of custom tools and integrations.

For your company's visibility, both matter – and they retrieve information in different ways. Gemini leans on Google's search index, while ChatGPT combines training data with its own web search. Being visible in one is therefore no guarantee of being visible in the other.

How much does Gemini cost?

Gemini is free to use with an ordinary Google account. The paid subscriptions Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra give access to the latest models, higher usage limits and more features in Google's products. See Google for current prices and what each tier includes.

Gemini powers two features in Google Search: AI Overviews, the AI-generated summary at the top of the results, and AI Mode, a fully conversational way of searching. According to Google, AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users in May 2026, and AI Mode passed 1 billion in about a year. To answer, Gemini breaks the question down into several sub-questions (query fan-out) and weaves the sources into a coherent answer. We walk through the mechanics in AI Overviews and GEO – how your company appears in Google's AI answers.

What does Gemini mean for SEO and AEO?

When Gemini summarises the answer directly in search, the number of clicks to individual websites falls – a phenomenon called zero-click search. Visibility is therefore no longer just about ranking high among the blue links, but about becoming one of the sources Gemini cites. That is the core of AEO and GEO. We describe how to position yourself for it in AI SEO 2026 – how your company appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

How does my company appear in Gemini's answers?

Gemini rewards content that is structured, credible and easy to cite. In practice, that means clear, self-contained answers in each paragraph (semantic chunking), strong E-E-A-T and a brand presence in the sources Google trusts. If information about your company is missing, the model fills the gap with guesses – or answers no. Strong AEO comes from combining strategy, copywriting, business understanding and a technical foundation: technology alone produces no citable answers, and copy alone does not structure content for machines.
