AI Overviews (Google AI Overview) – what they are, how Google chooses sources and what it means for your visibility
Definition
AI Overviews – sometimes called Google AI Overview – are Google's AI-generated summaries shown at the top of the search results, answering the user's question directly, often without requiring a click.
What are AI Overviews (Google AI Overview) and when do they appear?
AI Overviews – sometimes called Google AI Overview – are Google's AI-generated summaries shown at the top of the search results, above the organic links. Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024 and extended the feature to more than 100 countries in October 2024 (Google); in Sweden it began rolling out in May 2025 (Dagens PS). Before that, from May 2023, the feature was tested under the name Search Generative Experience (SGE). An AI Overview appears mainly for informational searches – questions that begin with "what", "how", "why" and the like.
Unlike featured snippets, which quote a single passage from one specific page, AI Overviews compile information from several sources and present a composite answer. The sources appear as clickable thumbnail links beside the text.
How does Google choose what to show in AI Overviews?
Google cites sources that meet high standards of trustworthiness, clarity and depth on the subject. Factors that make inclusion more likely:
- Quality and trustworthiness – AI Overviews are built on the same ranking and quality systems as ordinary search results, so first-hand experience and expertise count here too. E-E-A-T is not a ranking factor of its own, however (Google Search Central)
- Structured content – Clear headings, lists and self-contained paragraphs make the content easier to extract and cite
- A direct answer – Content that answers the question early in the text is favoured over long introductions
- Topical authority – Websites that cover a subject in depth and are consistently referenced by others
How do AI Overviews affect click-through?
The effect on CTR varies widely with the type of query. For simple factual questions, clicks fall when the answer is given directly. For complex questions, buying intent and situations where the user wants to read more, the picture is different – AI Overviews can actually generate clicks, because they spark curiosity and expose the sources to a wider audience.
The central shift is that visibility is no longer defined by positions 1–3 in organic search. A page can be cited in an AI Overview without ranking high among the ordinary results. In a measurement by Ahrefs (March 2026), 38% of the cited pages were in the top 10, 31% in positions 11–100 and 31% even further down.
How do you optimise for AI Overviews?
There is no separate "AI Overviews optimisation" – but the principles for getting cited are the same as good AEO practice:
- Answer questions directly and clearly, preferably early in the paragraph
- Use heading structures that mirror real search queries
- Write self-contained paragraphs that work without the surrounding context (semantic chunking)
- Build depth and breadth around a subject – not just individual pages with high search volumes
- Show clearly who is behind the content. No special structured data is required for AI Overviews (Google Search Central), but Organization markup that matches the page helps Google understand who you are

AI Overviews vs featured snippets
Featured snippets quote a single passage from a single page. AI Overviews summarise and synthesise from several sources. So you can contribute to an AI Overview without being the only cited source, and the contest for citability is no longer about winning a single snippet format but about being a credible voice in a wider information ecosystem.
AI Overviews fundamentally change how visibility works in search. When Google summarises the answer itself, the focus moves from ranking to owning the content. The winners will be those who build knowledge platforms where every page is a credible source – not just an optimised landing page.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode – what is the difference?
AI Mode is Google's next step towards conversational search and should not be confused with AI Overviews. AI Overviews appear automatically above the ordinary search results, without the user doing anything. AI Mode is a separate search mode – switched on by the user – where the whole interface is built around AI search with deeper reasoning and the option to ask follow-up questions.
The practical consequence: many of the principles for appearing in AI Overviews also apply to Google AI Mode, because both draw on Google's index and apply similar selection criteria for citability. We cover the difference in detail – including click data, what can be measured and ads – in our guide to Google AI Mode.
How do you check whether your content appears in AI Overviews?
There is no direct way to see a full list of the queries where you are cited, but three methods will show you where you appear:
- Manual searches in incognito – Search for the most important questions in your niche without being logged in. See whether an AI Overview appears and whether you are cited. Note that AI Overviews vary by user, geography and time
- Ahrefs Keywords Explorer with the SERP features filter – Filter keywords where "AI Overview" appears as a SERP feature. Check which of your target terms trigger AI Overviews and which sources are cited
- Google Search Console – A low CTR relative to impressions on informational terms can indicate that an AI Overview is taking the clicks
Common questions about AI Overviews
Is it AI Overviews, AI Overview or SGE?
They are the same thing. AI Overviews is Google's official product name and the term you will most often meet in English-language SEO writing; you will also see the singular, "Google AI Overview". In the Swedish interface Google translates the feature as AI-översikt, and that is the form most people in Sweden search for. Until May 2024 the feature was tested under the name Search Generative Experience (SGE). Whatever the name, it is the same thing: Google's AI-generated summary at the top of the search results.
What triggers an AI Overview?
Google shows AI Overviews mainly for informational searches – questions that begin with "what", "how", "why" and the like. An AI Overview is more likely when Google judges that:
- The question is complex enough that a summary is more helpful than a single link
- There is enough information to synthesise from reliable sources
- The query is not commercial – buying-intent and navigational searches rarely trigger AI Overviews
Coverage varies by country and type of question. How often one appears depends mostly on search intent – in a Swedish study of just over 137,000 keywords, 57% of informational queries showed an AI Overview, compared with 5% of buying queries (Noor Digital, May 2025–January 2026).
How do AI Overviews affect my organic traffic?
It depends on the type of question. For simple factual questions (informational, top of the funnel), many websites get fewer clicks when the AI Overview gives the answer directly. For complex questions and commercial searches the picture is different – AI Overviews can actually generate clicks, because the exposure sparks interest. According to a study by Pew Research Center (July 2025), users clicked an organic result in about 8% of searches with an AI summary, compared with about 15% without – roughly half. Bear in mind that this is a US panel study, not Swedish data, and Google has questioned its method. The strategic conclusion: focus on commercial and deep informational searches rather than simple factual questions.
How do AI Overviews work in Sweden?
AI Overviews were rolled out in Sweden in May 2025, around the time of Google I/O, and Swedish is one of the supported languages (Google Search Help). How often an AI Overview appears varies a lot with the type of query – informational queries trigger one most often, buying queries rarely. In Swedish B2B niches with specialist questions the field is still fairly open, so it makes strategic sense to start optimising for AI citability now, before competition intensifies.
Can you turn off or remove AI Overviews on Google?
As a user you can pick the Web filter below the search box, which shows plain links without an AI Overview (Google Search Help). Adding the parameter "\&udm=14" to the URL does the same, but Google has not documented it, so it may stop working. There is no way to switch off AI Overviews for all users, and for a business that would be the wrong strategy anyway. If AI Overviews affect your organic traffic, the answer is to optimise so that you are cited in them, not to ignore them. AI Overviews are a permanent part of Google's search results. Since August 2026, website owners can opt out of them in Search Console, but then the page cannot be cited there either (Search Console Help).
