Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews – the difference and what it means for your visibility

Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews: the difference

Google AI Mode – called "AI-läget" in Swedish – is a separate tab in Google's search results where you ask an AI questions instead of browsing through links. The feature has been available in Sweden since October 2025. Many people confuse it with AI Overviews, but the two work differently. The difference affects both your website's visibility and how you should think about traffic from here on.

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a conversational search surface in Google Search. It appears as a separate tab next to the regular search results and is also available in the Google app. Instead of a list of links, you get an AI-generated answer that you can follow up with further questions – much like ChatGPT, but built on Google's search index. In Swedish, Google calls the feature "AI-läget".

Technically, AI Mode is built on what Google calls query fan-out: your question is broken down into several related searches across different subtopics, and the answer is put together from the results. According to Google's documentation, the surface is intended for deeper exploration, reasoning and complex comparisons – questions where a single search result is not enough.

The core difference is placement. AI Overviews is an AI summary shown above the regular search results – the list of links remains below. AI Mode is a completely separate conversational surface that you actively choose, where the whole experience is AI-driven. According to Google, both use the same query fan-out technique, but AI Mode is built for longer reasoning and follow-up questions.

What this means for your visibility: in classic search you compete for clicks, in AI Overviews you compete to be cited above the clicks, and in AI Mode you compete to be one of the sources the AI builds its answer on. The foundation for all three is the same search index – if you are not in Google's regular index, you will not appear in the AI features either.

Is AI Mode live in Sweden – and how big is it?

Yes. AI Mode launched in Sweden on 8 October 2025, as part of a global expansion to 36 new languages and nearly 50 new countries.

It is growing fast. At Google I/O in May 2026, Google reported that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users and that the number of searches had more than doubled every quarter since launch. AI Overviews was said at the time to be even bigger, with 2.5 billion users, and Gemini 3.5 Flash was then the default model in AI Mode globally. Treat the figures as a dated snapshot: both user numbers and model versions change quickly, and Google only reports them a few times a year. Google is also building shopping features into AI search – we have written about what that means for online retailers in our guide to agentic commerce.

The figures are global. No usage data for AI Mode in Sweden has been published – nobody currently knows what share of Swedish searches take place there.

Does my traffic disappear when people use AI Mode?

There is no published click data for AI Mode specifically. The data that does exist concerns AI Overviews – and it points clearly downwards. Pew Research analysed 68,879 searches from March 2025 and found that users clicked on a regular result only 8% of the time when an AI summary was shown, compared with 15% without one. In an analysis of 300,000 keywords, Ahrefs found that AI Overviews correlated with a 58% lower CTR for the top-ranking page.

Both figures are snapshots from limited measurement periods, not constants. How often AI Overviews appear at all also varies widely between measurement tools and over time. So look at the direction – fewer clicks when the AI answers first – rather than the decimals, and never base a forecast for your own traffic on a single external measurement.

For AI Mode it is reasonable to assume a bigger impact on clicks – the whole surface is AI-driven and links are secondary. But that is an inference, not a measured figure. Zero-click search – searches that never lead to a click – was a reality before the AI features arrived; AI Mode probably reinforces the pattern.

Will there be ads in AI Mode in Sweden?

Not yet. Google is testing ads in AI Mode – but only in the US, and only as a test so far. At Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026, Google presented four new ad formats built with Gemini, of which two (Conversational Discovery Ads and Highlighted Answers) are being tested in the US and two have not yet launched. The ads are woven into the AI answer itself and clearly labelled as sponsored. There is no announced timetable for Sweden or the rest of Europe. It is reasonable to assume that ads will reach the AI surfaces here too sooner or later – search is Google's biggest source of revenue – but we recommend keeping an eye on developments rather than budgeting for them.

Do I need to optimise differently for AI Mode?

No – not according to Google itself. In its documentation on AI features, Google writes: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." What counts is the same foundation as regular SEO: technical accessibility, indexable content and robots controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Worth noting: Google's own documentation does not mention llms.txt – only robots.txt and established SEO fundamentals control what is shown in the AI features.

That does not mean all content is cited equally often. Structure, clear answers and content that shows genuine expertise (E-E-A-T) decide what the AI chooses to build on. Our guide to AI Overviews and GEO covers how to work with GEO in practice, and How does AI affect SEO? sets out the broader AEO framework – how AI SEO changes search work as a whole. This article stops at the distinction; you will find the concrete tactics there.

What should you do now – three concrete steps

AI Mode does not necessarily require new methods, but it rewards those who have the fundamentals in place. Three steps, in this order:

  • Secure the foundation first. Check that your website is technically sound: indexing works, robots.txt does not block the wrong things, and important pages load quickly. Without this you do not exist on any of Google's surfaces – AI or classic.
  • Track developments in GSC. You cannot isolate AI Mode traffic, but you can follow the trend: falling CTR with stable positions is an early sign that AI surfaces are capturing the clicks. Note where you stand today, so you have a benchmark.
  • Create citable content. Pages that answer a question directly, with a clear structure and well-sourced claims, are what AI answers are built from. It is the same content that wins in classic search – the work does double duty.

In short: the biggest difference lies not in the technology behind the answer, but in the context. In AI Mode, users write longer and more specific queries than in a regular search box, and each question is also broken down into several hidden sub-searches that never show up in your reports. The keyword list you optimise for therefore captures only part of what is actually being asked. We cover how to find and prioritise keywords when the questions are longer and partly invisible in keyword research in the AI era. On top of that, the click is no longer guaranteed – and anyone waiting for perfect measurement data will wait in vain. Want to know where your website stands in AI search? Common questions about Google AI Mode

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews is an AI summary shown above the regular search results, while AI Mode is a separate conversational tab where the whole search experience is AI-driven. Both are built on the same technology (query fan-out) and the same search index, but AI Mode is designed for follow-up questions and complex comparisons.

Is Google AI Mode available in Sweden?

Yes. AI Mode launched in Sweden on 8 October 2025 under the Swedish name "AI-läget", as part of a global expansion to 36 new languages. The feature appears as a separate tab in the search results and is also available in the Google app.

How can I tell whether my website appears in AI Mode?

No tool shows this precisely today. Google Search Console (GSC) does not report AI Mode separately – clicks and impressions from the AI features are folded into the regular web search report. The closest you can get is to put your most important questions to AI Mode yourself and see whether your website is cited as a source.

Does AI Mode affect my organic traffic?

Probably, but it cannot be measured separately yet. For AI Overviews, Pew Research shows that clicks on regular results almost halve when an AI summary is shown (8% vs 15%). For AI Mode there is no equivalent measurement, but since the whole surface is AI-driven, it is reasonable to assume a bigger impact.

Will there be ads in AI Mode in Sweden?

Not yet. Google is testing ads in AI Mode in the US – at Google Marketing Live 2026 it presented four ad formats built with Gemini, all clearly labelled as sponsored. There is no announced timetable for Sweden or the rest of Europe. Keep an eye on developments rather than budgeting for them.

Do I have to do anything special to appear in AI Mode?

No. Google states explicitly that no additional requirements or special optimisations are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. What matters is the regular SEO foundation: indexable content, robots.txt and snippet controls. Well-structured content that answers questions directly is, however, cited more often.

Is AI Mode replacing regular Google Search?

Not today. AI Mode is a separate tab that the user actively chooses – classic search with links remains the default. But it is growing fast: more than 1 billion monthly users and search volume that has more than doubled every quarter since launch, according to Google at I/O 2026.
