Share of voice (SoV): from organic visibility to LLM presence
Definition
Share of voice measures how much of the visibility in a given area a brand holds compared with its competitors – in search results, advertising or AI answers, for example.
What share of voice measures
The concept comes from traditional marketing, where it meant a brand's share of the advertising space in a channel. In search and AEO, it measures share of visibility – across many keywords and questions, not individual positions.
The strength of the metric is that it reflects the bigger picture. A single ranking says little; SoV shows how dominant you are across an entire subject area.
Share of voice in SEO
In traditional SEO, SoV is calculated as your combined visibility across a set of relevant keywords, weighted by search volume and position, relative to your competitors. This gives a more realistic picture than tracking a handful of terms – and it catches a broad loss of ground even when individual keywords look stable.
Visibility in AI answers
With the growth of AI search, a new metric has emerged: LLM share of voice. It measures how often your brand is mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers – from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and similar – relative to your competitors.
The logic is the same, but you are measuring in a different place. Visibility in an AI environment is not binary. The same question can be phrased in a hundred ways and give a hundred slightly different answers. LLM SoV tries to capture how consistently you appear across that variation.
Strong SEO does not guarantee strong AI presence
The key insight is that the two metrics do not automatically move together. A brand can dominate the organic search results and still rarely appear in AI answers – if its content is hard to interpret or out of date, or if the brand is absent from the platforms the AI draws on.
The reverse is also true: a brand with modest organic visibility can have a disproportionately high LLM SoV if its content is clear, up to date and consistently mentioned in the right contexts. The upshot: visibility can no longer be measured in one place.
How to measure share of voice in practice
Organic SoV is tracked with ordinary SEO tools across a keyword portfolio. LLM SoV requires a different method – it cannot be read off a normal rank tracker.
According to Search Engine Land, the more rigorous methods use a polling model: a representative sample of questions is run repeatedly against the AI systems, and the brand's presence in the answers is tracked as an average over time. That gives a more stable picture than one-off spot checks, which vary widely from answer to answer.
We explain how to build that visibility in practice in AI SEO 2026.
