YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) – what it is and why it raises the bar for your website
Definition
YMYL is a term coined by Google that stands for "Your Money or Your Life". It refers to content that can affect a person's health, finances and safety, or society at large, and which Google therefore holds to especially high standards of quality and credibility.
What counts as YMYL?
YMYL covers topics that can significantly affect a person's health, finances, safety or society at large. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines divide it into four types of potential harm:
- Health and safety – medical information, medicines, mental health, physical safety.
- Financial security – financial advice, investments, loans and major purchases.
- Society and civics – government information, elections and news about important events. This category was clarified in Google's guidelines in 2025.
- Other – other topics where poor content can harm people or society.
YMYL is a scale – not an on/off switch
A common misconception is that a page either is YMYL or is not. Google has moved away from that view. Today's assessment starts from a single question: can incorrect content on this page cause harm?
So YMYL is a sliding scale. An article about a hobby is unlikely to be YMYL. A page about choosing a pension savings plan is clearly YMYL content. Much lies in between – a B2B page that affects a company's financial decisions has some YMYL element, while content that affects individuals' financial futures is often seen as having a larger one. It is worth thinking about where your content actually lands.
Why YMYL raises the bar
For ordinary content, being helpful and relevant goes a long way. For YMYL content Google raises the bar considerably, because the consequences of poor content are more serious.
Google assesses this through E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust. For a YMYL page, every part carries more weight. Google wants to see real experience or documented expertise, a clearly identified and verifiable source, and information that is correct and up to date.
No compromise on credibility
Of the four parts of E-E-A-T, trust – credibility – is the most important. Google's guidelines are explicit: a page with low trust cannot be considered high quality, however competent and experienced the people behind it are.
For YMYL content, signals such as named authorship, contact details, source references, update dates and a good reputation outside your own website are not a bonus – they are a precondition for being visible at all.
YMYL in AI search
In AI-generated search, YMYL becomes even more sensitive. AI systems are noticeably more careful about which sources they cite in health, finance and law, and lean on established players with clear credibility signals.
The logic is the same as Google's: the greater the risk of harm, the higher the demands on the source. For a company in or near a YMYL area, visibility in AI answers therefore requires genuinely earned trust – there are no shortcuts.
How to strengthen YMYL content
- Show clearly who is behind the content – a named author with a relevant background.
- Back up claims with sources, and keep the information up to date over time.
- Make it easy to verify who is behind the website: clear contact details, an about page and a responsible publisher.
- Be honest about uncertainty and limitations instead of overpromising.
For companies in or close to a YMYL area, SEO and AEO cannot be handled as marketing alone – it takes content built on real expertise. And where content creation is automated, it is particularly important to build in clear steps for human strategy and quality review.
