SEO copywriter – what the role involves, how it differs from a regular copywriter and when you need one
Definition
An SEO copywriter writes text that gets found in search engines and persuades the reader at the same time. The role combines a copywriter's craft with an understanding of search intent, structure and technical SEO – so that the content both ranks and generates business.
Writing persuasive copy and writing text that gets found in search have long been two different crafts. Now that AI answers have become a source of visibility in their own right, the brief has grown further: the text has to convince a reader, rank in Google and be quotable in an AI answer – all at once.
What does an SEO copywriter do?
The core of the work is writing content built around what people actually search for. In practice the work starts before any writing: keyword research shows which questions the target audience asks and with what search intent. The text is then shaped around that – headings that answer the questions, a skimmable structure, and wording that works for both readers and machines.
Beyond the body text, an SEO copywriter is often responsible for the page's title tag and meta description, for internal links to related content and for making sure the text actually delivers what the heading promises. That last part is not cosmetic: content that does not match the search intent loses the visitor – and with the visitor, the ranking – however well written it is.
SEO copywriter vs regular copywriter – what is the difference?
A copywriter optimises for effect in a chosen channel: the ad, the mailshot, the packaging. The audience is already there. An SEO copywriter has to earn the audience first – the text competes with every other answer to the same search query, and that competition is decided by relevance and structure, not by creative brilliance alone.
The difference shows in how they work. The SEO copywriter works from data (search volumes, competitor analysis, search intent), structures the text for search engines and AI (clear H2 questions, self-contained paragraphs) and writes for a page that is meant to last. The craft underneath is the same, though: clarity, rhythm and language that moves the reader to act. An SEO copywriter who cannot write engaging, persuasive copy is just as wrong a choice as one who can only sell.
Can AI replace an SEO copywriter?
AI has changed the role more than it has threatened it. Drafts, variation and volume – work that used to take hours – are now quick with AI support. What cannot be automated are the decisions: which angle sets the text apart from the ten pages that already rank, which claims hold up to scrutiny, and how the brand's voice should sound. That is where the value lies.
As a result, the role is shifting towards editor and strategist: the human sets the angle, checks the facts and keeps the tone of voice – AI provides the speed. We show what that craft looks like in practice in SEO content and blog posts 2026 – writing for Google, AI and people.
Do you need an SEO copywriter or an agency?
It depends on where the bottleneck is. If you need individual texts for a website that otherwise works, a skilled freelance SEO copywriter is often enough. But if the website does not rank at all, or visibility has to be built from the ground up, the text is rarely the only thing that decides the outcome: strategy, technical SEO, internal linking and authority carry just as much weight. Strong SEO and AEO come from the combination – strategy, copywriting, business understanding and a technical foundation. Copy alone does not structure content for machines, and technology alone produces no quotable answers.
If you want to hire an SEO copywriter from us, you get the copy together with the keyword selection, publishing and follow-up – at a fixed price per project or within an SEO agreement with no lock-in.
An honest test: ask whoever you are considering hiring to explain which search intent a proposed text is meant to serve, and how it will avoid competing with content you already have. Someone who answers with a keyword list rather than reasoning is producing text – not visibility.
