Social media SEO 2026 – how to use YouTube, Reddit and Quora to strengthen your brand in search

Social media SEO 2026: YouTube, Reddit, Quora

What is social media SEO?

Social media SEO means optimising your company's presence and content on social platforms so that it gets discovered – not just by people, but by algorithms and AI models too. It means appearing in the platforms' own search results, on YouTube and Reddit for example, and positioning your brand as the source AI chooses to cite.

Unlinked brand mentions have become much more valuable in recent years. Google understands context better and does not need an actual link to attribute value to your domain. If your brand is mentioned in the right context – on Reddit, in YouTube comments or in Quora answers – it counts.

Three ways social media SEO creates business value

A common mistake is to see social media solely as a channel for driving traffic to your own website. In practice, a well-thought-out answer on Reddit or a focused YouTube tutorial creates value in three clear layers.

1. The direct value – here and now

When you answer a question on Reddit or publish a tutorial on YouTube, you meet the user at exactly the right moment.

  • Immediate trust – A relevant answer on Reddit creates a positive association directly on the platform, without the user having to leave the app.
  • Quick authority – A YouTube video that solves a concrete problem positions you as an expert, whether or not the viewer clicks through.

2. Brand mentions – your digital currency

Every time your brand is mentioned in a relevant context, your authority grows.

  • For people – Recurring mentions in independent Reddit threads act as social proof. Your brand comes to be seen as the obvious choice.
  • For search engines – Google interprets consistent mentions, even without links, as signals of relevance and credibility. That strengthens your brand signals and can indirectly benefit your traditional SEO.

Social media is at least as important for AEO as for SEO. AI loves user-generated content. When someone asks a broad question such as "What is the best CRM platform for small businesses?", the AI looks for consensus – and it does not find it in polished sales copy, but in discussions on Reddit and tutorials on YouTube. ChatGPT cites Reddit strikingly often.

When your brand consistently publishes helpful, problem-solving content on these platforms, the likelihood that AI picks you as a source in chat-based search rises sharply.

YouTube SEO – the strongest channel

YouTube is the world's second-largest search engine, and the platform where social media SEO gives the biggest return. Many searches on Google now show video carousels and featured videos from YouTube, and a well-optimised video can appear in Google's search results without your website needing to rank at all.

How the YouTube algorithm ranks videos

YouTube ranks videos based on relevance and engagement. Relevance is decided by how well the metadata matches the search query. Engagement is measured through:

  • Watch time – How much of the video viewers watch on average. The single most important ranking factor.
  • Click-through rate (CTR) – The share of people who see your thumbnail and click on it. A CTR below 2–4% is a sign that the title or thumbnail needs reworking.
  • Engagement signals – Likes, comments and saved videos signal relevance to the algorithm.

Keyword research for YouTube

Search behaviour on YouTube differs from Google's. Start with YouTube's autocomplete: type in your topic and note the suggestions – that is exactly what people search for. Add tools such as TubeBuddy or VidIQ to see search volume and competition level directly in the interface.

The goal is a primary keyword with sufficient volume and relatively low competition. A video about "Excel XLOOKUP function step by step" ranks more easily and converts better than one about "Excel tips".

Title and description

The title is YouTube's equivalent of a title tag and the strongest single ranking signal.

  • Place the primary keyword early – ideally within the first 60 characters
  • Be concrete and make a clear promise. "How to fix X in 5 minutes" often performs better than generic phrasing
  • Avoid clickbait that causes early drop-off – it hurts watch time directly

The first 150 characters of the description are shown before the user clicks "Show more". Put the primary keyword and the video's core value there. Include timestamps (chapters) – they improve the user experience and create clickable sections in Google's search results.

Transcripts and subtitles

YouTube generates automatic subtitles, but they often get specialist language and industry terms wrong. Upload a manual transcript or correct the auto-generated one. Subtitles are crawlable text – both YouTube and Google index them, which strengthens the video's semantic signals without any extra work.

Thumbnails and CTR

The thumbnail is the first thing a user sees. A high CTR tells the algorithm that the content is relevant and earns the video more exposure. Use contrasting colours, clear text (3–5 words at most) and a face if possible. Keep a consistent visual style across your videos to build recognition.

How YouTube videos rank on Google

Google prioritises video answers for specific search intents: tutorials, how-to questions and reviews. If your primary keyword triggers a video carousel on Google, the competition is often lower than for traditional organic results. A video ranks on Google based on:

  • The relevance of the title and description to the search query
  • The domain authority of youtube.com – extremely high, which gives videos a natural advantage
  • Engagement signals: views, likes and embeds

Always optimise the video content with Google's search results page in mind, not just YouTube's own search.

Reddit – conversation-driven SEO and AEO

Reddit is the platform AI models cite most frequently. A consistent, helpful presence in relevant subreddits builds brand mentions, trust and AEO visibility in a way no paid channel can match.

Be a genuine part of the community. Let experts and product managers answer from personal profiles – not anonymous company accounts. Aim for quality in your answers, not quantity. Always be open about the fact that you work at company X. The Reddit community quickly spots inauthentic marketing and punishes it harshly.

Identify the subreddits where your target audience discusses the problems you solve. Add genuine value in existing threads before you start your own. An exceptional comment in a busy thread gives more exposure and more mentions than ten mediocre posts.

Quora – long-term visibility in Q&A

Quora still ranks in Google's search results for a large number of questions, and well-written answers can generate visibility and mentions for years to come. Identify the questions in your industry with the most friction and answer them properly – with a clear structure, concrete examples and, ideally, data.

Quora is particularly effective for B2B companies with complex products or services. A question such as "How do I choose the right CDP for my company?", answered thoroughly by your product expert, puts your brand in front of someone who is actively looking to buy.

How to maximise the effect

  • Question research – Analyse Reddit and Quora to turn keywords into concrete questions. "How do you scale customer support in a SaaS company?" is a better starting point for content than "customer support SaaS".
  • Be helpful first – Content that actually solves a problem creates the most value, even without a click, CTA or pitch.
  • Coordinate the channels – Publish a YouTube video that answers a common Reddit question. Link to the video in your Quora answer. Three channels reinforcing the same message build a stronger overall brand presence.
  • Measure the bigger picture – Stop focusing solely on traffic. Track brand mentions and ask in every deal: "Where did you first hear about us?"

Conclusion

Social media SEO is not a tactical shortcut for tricking algorithms. It is a strategic way of owning the conversation where it is already happening. By being visible where questions are asked and problems are discussed, you build up trust that pays off as a stronger brand, better SEO and a natural place in the AI-driven answers of the future.
