What does an SEO agency cost in 2026? Pricing, contracts, how to choose – and why rankings are no longer enough

In Sweden, an SEO agency usually costs between SEK 10,000 and 50,000 a month in 2026. But SEO pricing says little on its own – what decides whether the money is well spent is what you actually get for it, and how you know you have chosen the right partner.
This guide covers three things: what an SEO agency costs and why, how to choose the right one without being taken for a ride, and something almost every other pricing guide misses: the term "SEO agency" means something different in 2026. An agency that only optimises for high rankings in Google is doing half the job today.
If you are actually looking for what it costs to build the website itself, that is a different question. We answer it in What does a website cost in 2026? This guide is only about the ongoing SEO investment.
SEO pricing: what does an SEO agency cost in Sweden in 2026?
Most SEO agencies work with one of three pricing models. Which one suits you depends on how mature your website is and how much you want to manage yourself.
- Hourly rate – you buy consultant hours on an ongoing basis. Suits one-off pieces of work and advice. Risk: unclear deliverables; you do not know what you are getting until afterwards.
- Monthly fee (retainer) – a fixed amount per month for a defined scope of work. Suits ongoing programmes. Risk: the agency may have an incentive to deliver activity rather than results.
- Project or performance-based – a one-off delivery, for example a technical analysis, or a model tied to targets being met. Performance models require you to agree on how results are measured.
The ranges below are estimates based on public pricing guides from Swedish agencies and quotes we have seen over the past year. They are a market observation, not an independent industry survey. Price is also only half the picture – just as important is the expertise and way of working you get for the money.
| Pricing model | EstimatedPrice range 2026 | What you should demand |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly rateconsultant / one-off work | SEK 1,000–2,000/h | Documentation; a human steers |
| Monthly retainerongoing programme | SEK 10,000–50,000+/month | AI process + human review |
| Project / analysisone-off delivery | SEK 15,000–50,000 | You own the data and content |
The main price drivers:
- Level of competition – highly competitive industries require more work for the same visibility
- Scope – does it include content production and link building, or only technical optimisation?
- Expertise and way of working – whether the work is done by hand or through an AI-supported process with human quality control matters more today than the size of the agency
- AEO and brand work – agencies that also work with AI visibility put in more strategy
A common view among Swedish agencies is that assignments under roughly SEK 5,000 a month rarely have a real effect – the money simply does not stretch to more than superficial optimisation. That is an agency's perspective rather than an absolute truth, but the logic holds: SEO is labour-intensive, and too little budget means too little work.
How much does local SEO cost?
In Sweden, a smaller local SEO assignment often costs around SEK 8,000–12,000 a month. Our local engagements sit in the same range, at SEK 8,000–12,000 (≈ €700–1,100) a month, excluding VAT. Where you land in that range depends on the number of towns and profiles, and on how competitive each town is.
The prices from other Swedish agencies below are their own figures. According to Swivrr (in Swedish), a local assignment covering one to three keywords costs SEK 8,000–12,000 a month, and one covering three towns around SEK 15,000. According to Topdog (in Swedish), smaller assignments come in at SEK 8,000–15,000.
Most of the work goes into Google Business Profile and reviews, which decide much of where you rank in Google Maps. The profile needs the right category, complete details, real photos and regular posts. On top of that comes a routine for requesting and replying to reviews, consistent business details (NAP) in every directory, and a landing page for each town with its own content. Every new town adds a page, and often a profile, to keep up to date.
A review of the profile and business details is a defined one-off job that costs considerably less than an ongoing agreement. Cheaper monthly packages exist too: Skale (in Swedish), for example, has a starting price of SEK 3,000 a month. If you are considering one, compare what is included with what you actually need.
Start from what a new customer is worth. If a customer is worth SEK 4,000 in contribution margin and the work costs SEK 10,000 a month, local search needs to bring in 2.5 new customers a month for the work to pay for itself. So track calls and direction requests in the profile's insights. They tell you more about new customers than your ranking does.
You can handle local SEO yourself if you, or someone in the company, has time for the ongoing work. The checklist in our guide to local search engine optimisation shows the order to work in. When it is worth bringing in an agency is covered in the glossary section on local SEO agencies.
How much does e-commerce SEO cost?
For an online store, the price is driven by scale: how many categories and templates it has, how many old technical problems it carries and how many markets it sells in.
In Sweden, SEO for an online store starts at around SEK 7,500–10,000 a month according to Skale, and reaches SEK 30,000–60,000 and more for larger stores according to Topdog. According to Swivrr, a store with 500 products competing with IKEA and Jysk costs around SEK 35,000 a month. With a spread like that, a general range says little about your particular store.
Scale matters so much because the work on an online store happens in templates and systems, not page by page. Titles, metadata and structured data have to be right for every product. Filters and pagination must not create thousands of unnecessary URLs, and every new market needs its own keyword research.
So budget in two steps: first a one-off project for the technology, category structure and templates, then the ongoing work. The first step often brings quick improvements, because a fix in a template takes effect across the whole range. We describe what each step includes in the section of our e-commerce SEO guide on what SEO costs for an online store. A platform migration or a larger rebuild is quoted separately.
For an online store, you do the maths on order value. With an average order value of SEK 800 and a 40 per cent margin, each order brings in SEK 320 in contribution margin. If the SEO work costs SEK 25,000 a month, it needs to bring in around 80 extra organic orders a month to break even.
If it is unclear how much needs fixing, an SEO audit can establish the scope before the budget is set.
How much does B2B SEO cost?
Our B2B engagements usually cost SEK 10,000–50,000 (≈ €900–4,500) a month. The level is driven less by search volume than by your ambition, how complex the product is, the competition and the number of languages and markets.
A smaller company selling in Sweden, in a niche with little competition, can manage on less than SEK 10,000 (≈ €900) a month once a one-off project has laid the groundwork. For comparison, according to Swivrr, a mid-range assignment in Sweden costs SEK 12,000–25,000 a month and one for a software company around SEK 18,000.
The cost lies in getting to know the product. A technical product means interviews with sales and support, content for every role in the buying committee and pages that support the buying decision: comparisons, integrations, security, pricing and case studies. In regulated industries there is an approval process for the copy on top. Measurement also needs to be in place before you start: a field for first landing page in your CRM, and the question "How did you hear about us?" in sales calls.
A worked example: a deal is worth SEK 200,000 in contribution margin and the SEO work costs SEK 18,000 a month, or SEK 216,000 a year. Just over one deal a year is then enough for the work to pay for itself. That is why a keyword with only 30 searches a month can be worth pursuing, if one of those searches can turn into a deal worth several hundred thousand kronor.
Expect enquiries to arrive roughly one sales cycle after the pages have started to rank, so evaluate the work quarter by quarter. If the value per deal is low and searches are few, SEO is rarely the right channel. In that case we would sooner recommend Google Ads or direct outreach. How an ongoing B2B collaboration is set up is described on the page about our work as a B2B SEO agency.
Ongoing SEO or a one-off project – which should you choose?
In Sweden, an SEO audit usually costs SEK 15,000–50,000, according to Swivrr among others. An ongoing collaboration with us usually costs SEK 10,000–50,000 (≈ €900–4,500) a month. The choice comes down to two questions: do you know what the website needs, and is there someone in the company who can carry it out? We set a fixed price for our audit after a call about your website.
- You do not know what is needed – then a fixed-price SEO audit is often a good first step. You get an assessment of where you stand, a prioritised action list and a plan you can carry out yourself, with us or with someone else.
- You know what is needed and the work is ongoing – then a monthly agreement suits you, with technical work, content, off-page SEO and follow-up running to a plan that is reprioritised according to what is working.
- The website is going to be rebuilt – lay the SEO foundation in the build. The technical foundation is always included in our website projects. Keyword research with a page structure and SEO copy can be added in the same project; see website redesign for businesses.
With a project, you buy a picture of where you stand and a clear order of priorities. The results come once the actions are carried out, so a project suits you when you have a developer or writer who can take the list forward. With an ongoing collaboration, you buy continuity: someone who does the work, follows up and reprioritises – and the agreement can cover more than SEO when you need it to.
The two can be combined. If you sign an ongoing SEO agreement with us, the audit is included. Startabolag got a new website, a small one-off SEO project and then an ongoing collaboration of 3.5 hours a month – and its organic traffic has grown ever since.
What does an SEO agency do – and how does an agency differ from an SEO consultant?
An SEO agency works to make your website visible in search engines and AI answers over time, so that the right visitors find you and become customers. It is ongoing work, not a one-off effort.
The difference from an SEO consultant is one of scope. A consultant is usually one person working on a defined task or in an advisory role. An agency is a team covering several disciplines at once – technology, content and digital authority.
To be completely honest: an experienced freelance consultant can be both cheaper and sharper for a defined task, such as a technical review or a second opinion. An agency is usually the right choice when you need breadth and continuity – someone who moves the work forward month after month without you having to drive and coordinate everything yourself. That is why it matters to find an agency with both the expertise and the willingness to understand your business.
A typical agency assignment includes:
- Strategy – starting from your business and prioritising the right work, so that technology, content and authority pull in the same (right) direction
- Technical SEO – making sure the website is fast, indexable and readable for search engines and AI
- On-page – keyword research, search intent and content that answers real questions
- Off-page – backlinks, brand mentions and digital PR that build authority
- AEO – content structured so that AI answers cite you
- Measurement – tracking tied to traffic, leads and business results
How does an SEO agency work – what is actually included in the service?
A reputable SEO agency starts by analysing your business and where you stand, not with promises of rankings. First it maps your technical position, the searches your customers actually make and what the competition looks like. Then it builds a well-thought-out SEO strategy – a prioritised plan from business goal to measurement.
The work then runs in recurring cycles. The technical foundation is put right, content is produced and improved, authority is built externally, and everything is tracked against measurable goals.
This is what the different parts mean in concrete terms:
- Technical SEO – indexing, crawlability, pagespeed, Core Web Vitals and schema markup
- Content – keyword research, topic clusters and pages built around search intent
- Authority – link building with white hat SEO methods and work on brand mentions
- AEO and GEO – semantic chunking, FAQ structure and citable content for AI answers
- Reporting – monthly follow-up of visibility, traffic and conversions
How the work gets done has changed as much as what it covers. An effective, competent SEO agency in 2026 uses AI for speed and scale – but always lets a human steer the strategy and quality-check the result. In practice that means AI agents that handle recurring tasks and context files that feed the model the right facts, tone of voice and rules, so that the content stays consistent. The human decides what should be written, why and for whom – and reviews and adjusts the details before anything is published. That is how you scale SEO efficiently without sacrificing quality.
A reputable agency explains what it does and why – and speaks up when something you ask for is not worth the money. If all you hear is "we'll take care of the SEO" and you cannot see what the work consists of, that is a warning sign.
SEO in 2026 has three layers – and most agencies deliver only one
The biggest change in the industry is that visibility no longer just means rankings in Google. Modern SEO consists of three layers, and an agency that only masters the first leaves a growing share of your visibility, and the business that comes with it, untapped.
Layer 1 – classic SEO. Technical health, on-page SEO and link building. It is measured in rankings and organic traffic. Still necessary – but no longer sufficient.
Layer 2 – AEO/GEO. Are you visible when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude or Google's AI Overviews? AI answers cite content, not rankings. An agency that does not work on citability will not get you into those answers. And the point is not just visibility: if an AI lacks information about your company, it tends to answer "no" rather than "don't know" – and that costs you business directly.
Layer 3 – brand signals. How often your brand is mentioned and searched for carries more and more weight. According to Ahrefs, mentions of your brand (branded mentions) correlate at 0.664 with visibility in Google's AI Overviews – more strongly than both backlinks (0.218) and domain authority (0.326). Ahrefs also points out that correlation is not the same as causation. Meanwhile, Google rolled out Preferred Sources globally in April 2026 – a feature that lets users choose which sources they want to see more often, and which works alongside the usual ranking systems.
Layer 3 is the new centre of gravity for off-page SEO. For a long time the discipline was mostly about link building (layer 1), but with the arrival of AI search it has grown to cover brand signals too – and it carries more weight than ever.
What this means for you as a buyer: an agency that only reports "we rank in position X" is measuring the wrong layer. Ask instead how they work on your visibility in AI answers and how they track mentions of your brand.
We have written more about how this works in practice in AI SEO 2026 and AI Overviews and GEO.
Is it worth hiring an SEO agency?
It is worth it when you have a working website, a product or service the market wants, and the patience to let the work take effect. The calculation is simple in principle: organic traffic times conversion rate times value per deal, minus what the SEO work costs. You can test the logic with our SEO ROI calculator.
But SEO is not always the right investment at a given moment. Hold off if any of the following applies:
- The website is about to be rebuilt – build SEO in properly from the start instead of optimising something that will soon be replaced
- You expect results within a few weeks – SEO takes effect over months, not days
- Measurement is missing – without working analytics, neither you nor the agency knows what actually works
- The product does not meet a need – SEO gives you more visitors, but it does not make a product without demand start selling
If your bottleneck is that visitors do not convert, rather than that there are too few of them, conversion rate optimisation can give a higher return than more traffic. We have done the maths in CRO agency: what does conversion rate optimisation cost?
How do you choose the right SEO agency?
The right SEO agency takes ownership of your results – not just of the invoice. The clearest signals come when you ask concrete questions and listen for straight answers. Ask these questions before you sign:
- How do you work on my visibility in AI answers, not just in Google? The answer reveals whether the agency has kept up with the times or still works as if it were 2018.
- Which keywords do you want to rank for – and why those? Good agencies start from business value, not from terms that are easy to win.
- How do you report, and do you tie results to traffic and business? A ranking with no link to leads says little.
- How do you use AI in your work – and who steers the strategy and handles quality assurance? AI should provide speed and scale, but a human should own the strategy and review what is published.
- Who owns the data, accounts and content if we end the collaboration? The answer should always be: you.
- What would you advise me against? A partner speaks up. A supplier says yes to everything.
The questions above are specific to SEO. If you are also choosing an agency for the whole website – design, technology and SEO together – we have a broader walkthrough in How to choose a web design agency – 16 questions to ask.
Red flags – how to recognise a disreputable SEO agency
Most Swedish SEO agencies are reputable. But a few patterns recur among the ones you should avoid:
- Guaranteed first place. According to Google, nobody can guarantee a first-place ranking in organic search. A guarantee is a sales line, not a method.
- The agency quietly picks the keywords. A classic trick is to rank for terms that are easy to win but that nobody searches for – a nice report, zero business.
- Long contracts with no review point. A 12–24-month lock-in before you have seen a single result leaves you carrying the risk.
- You do not own your data. If the agency holds your analytics tools, Search Console and logins hostage, you are locked in.
- Black hat SEO methods. Bought link packages and thin content can give a short-term boost – but a Google penalty takes months to recover from (how to tell whether it has happened to you). Reputable agencies work with white hat SEO methods.
Suspect that your current agency is not delivering? Then Website not ranking? The 10 most common causes will help you work out whether the problem lies in the website or in the work.
What should an SEO agreement include?
A good SEO agreement protects you without locking you in. It is often in the small print that the difference between a partner and a trap becomes clear. Make sure the following is covered:
- Notice period – 1–3 months is reasonable. A longer lock-in without a review is a warning sign.
- Ownership – you own the content, the data, Search Console and the analytics accounts, even after the collaboration ends.
- Reporting – clarity about what is reported and how often, tied to traffic, leads and AI visibility – not just rankings.
- Scope – what is included each month and what comes on top.
We take it a step further: SEOS Design is an SEO agency with no notice period. We do not tie anyone to a contract – we only work with clients who are happy with us, and we keep our clients because the results speak for themselves, not because the small print forces them to stay.
Which is the best SEO agency in Sweden?
No SEO agency is objectively the best, and you should be sceptical of lists that claim otherwise. Many lists of "Sweden's best SEO agencies" are either directories that charge for placement or lists published by agencies that put themselves at the top.
The best agency for you is the one that understands your industry, is open about price and expectations, and delivers all three layers with a good process – classic SEO, AEO and brand work.
How SEOS Design works with SEO and AEO
At SEOS Design we see SEO and AEO as the same assignment, not as an add-on. Classic technical SEO and content build the foundation, and the work on AI visibility and brand signals is built on top of it – because a client who ranks high in Google but is invisible in AI answers still loses business.
One concrete difference in how we work on AEO is that our keyword research is more hypothesis-driven and relies on proxy data. AI search lacks the volume data that Google has, and the questions are longer and more specific: long tail keywords dominate more and the tail gets even longer.
In practice we use structured AI processes for speed and scale – with our own agents and context files that keep facts, tone and structure consistent – but with a human as strategist and final quality check. The automation provides the scale; the judgement and the responsibility are ours.
We are open about price and time horizon, never promise rankings we cannot control, and speak up when a piece of work is not worth the money. And as we said: we do not tie you in with any notice period. Want to know what your particular situation requires? Get in touch and we will book a no-obligation call.
Common questions about SEO agencies
How much does SEO cost per month?
In Sweden, an ongoing SEO service in 2026 usually costs between SEK 10,000 and 50,000 a month for small and medium-sized companies. Smaller and local assignments tend to be around SEK 8,000–12,000, medium-sized programmes SEK 12,000–25,000, and assignments in highly competitive industries SEK 25,000 and upwards. The price is driven by factors such as the level of competition and the scope.
How long does it take for SEO to deliver results?
Most agencies reckon on 4–12 months before SEO delivers its clearest business results, depending on the competition, the website's starting point and how much is invested. Improvements can be visible within weeks, but building real authority around the content takes time. Be sceptical of an agency that promises top rankings within a few weeks.
Can an SEO agency guarantee first place on Google?
No. Nobody can guarantee a first-place ranking in organic search – the results are governed by algorithms that no agency controls. An agency that guarantees a specific position should be seen as a warning sign rather than a promise.
What is the difference between an SEO agency and an SEO consultant?
An SEO consultant is usually one person working on a defined task or in an advisory role, while an SEO agency is a team that covers technology, content and brand mentions on an ongoing basis. An experienced freelance consultant can be more cost-effective for one-off pieces of work, while an agency offers breadth and continuity over time.
Should my SEO agency also handle AI visibility (AEO)?
Yes. In 2026 it is not enough to rank high in Google – more and more people look for answers directly in ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. An agency that does not work with AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) will not get you into those answers in the same way. The big change lies in the range of search terms you need to reach and the need for professional keyword analysis. What is more, if an AI lacks accurate information about a company, that company risks being described incorrectly when a potential customer asks about it.
What contract length is reasonable for an SEO agreement?
A reasonable notice period is 1–3 months. SEO takes time to take effect, so committing for an initial period makes sense – but contracts with a 12–24-month lock-in and no review point are a major warning sign. You should also keep ownership of your data, your accounts and your content if you decide to change agency.
SEOS Design has no notice period – we only work with clients who are happy with us.
