Local SEO – how visibility works in the Local Pack, Google Maps and local search results
Definition
Local SEO is the process of optimising a website and wider digital presence to show up in location-based search results – when potential customers search for services or products in a specific area.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO means making sure your business shows up when someone searches for what you offer in your town or region. The search term can be explicitly geographic – such as "lawyer Stockholm" – or implicit, as when Google decides that the search "lawyer" is best answered with local results based on the searcher's location.
Local SEO differs from traditional search engine optimisation in that the competition is geographically limited. You do not need to rank globally – you need to rank better than your competitors in your catchment area.
Local searchers are also unusually close to buying: in Google's consumer study with Ipsos, 76% of people who searched on their phone for something nearby visited a physical business within a day, and 28% of the searches led to a purchase (Think with Google, US data from 2016 – still the most cited figure in the field).
The Local Pack – your most important shop window
For local searches, Google often shows a "Local Pack" – three businesses with a map at the top of the page, above the organic results. Getting into the Local Pack is the most important goal of local SEO.
Google decides which businesses are shown in the Local Pack based on three factors:
- Relevance – How well does the business match the searcher's intent?
- Distance – How close is the business to the searcher?
- Prominence – How well known and well cited is the business online?
Google Business Profile – the foundation of local visibility
Google Business Profile is the single most important component of local SEO. An optimised profile is what decides whether you appear in the Local Pack, the Knowledge Panel and Google Maps. The profile contains opening hours, address, reviews, photos and direct contact details – everything a potential customer needs to choose you.
NAP consistency
NAP – name, address, phone number – is the set of three details that must be identical on every platform where your business appears: your website, Google Business Profile, directories (in Sweden, for example, Eniro), industry directories and social media.
Inconsistent NAP data confuses Google and can lower your local ranking. A simple audit – going through every place your business is mentioned online and making sure the details match – is often a quick win with a clear effect.
Local reviews and their impact
Reviews are a strong ranking factor in local SEO. The number of reviews, the average rating and how often new reviews come in all affect your visibility in the Local Pack.
How you respond to reviews matters at least as much. Managing them actively – negative reviews included – signals to Google that the business is engaged and reliable. It also influences potential customers who read the reviews before they get in touch.
Local SEO on the website
Beyond Google Business Profile, several on-page factors strengthen local SEO:
- Geographic keywords – Work place names naturally into headings, meta descriptions and content
- LocalBusiness schema – Structured data that helps Google understand that you are a local business with a physical address
- Embedded map – An embedded Google Map on the contact page strengthens geographic relevance
- Local landing pages – If you operate in several towns, create separate pages for each location with genuinely local content, rather than copies with the town names swapped
Local SEO for service businesses without a physical shop
Service businesses that work in the customer's home – tradespeople, consultants, cleaning companies – can still rank locally. In Google Business Profile, you set a service area instead of an address that customers visit. The principles are the same: reviews, the right categories, consistent NAP and an optimised website.
How do you measure local SEO performance?
Local SEO performance is best measured with a combination of tools. Google Business Profile insights show how users find and interact with your profile. Google Search Console shows which search terms bring clicks to the website. Rank tracking tools such as Ahrefs can track positions by town or region for your priority search terms.
How does local SEO work – step by step?
Local SEO is built from a few well-defined components that together decide whether your business shows up in the Local Pack and Google Maps. A typical order of priority:
- Optimise Google Business Profile – Verify the profile, choose the right primary category, and fill in opening hours, services and a description with relevant keywords. Upload photos and publish posts regularly.
- Ensure NAP consistency – Name, address and phone number must be identical on your website and Google Business Profile, and in all industry directories and social media.
- Actively build local reviews – Ask satisfied customers to leave Google reviews. Reply to every review, including negative ones. Review frequency and rating directly affect your Local Pack ranking.
- Add LocalBusiness schema to the website – Structured data tells Google straight away that you are a local business with a specific address and type of business.
- Create local content – Write pages and posts that address local needs and mention relevant place names naturally. If you operate in several towns, create dedicated landing pages for each location.
It often takes a couple of months before local SEO shows clear results in the Local Pack – but done right, it gives you stable visibility that paid advertising cannot match in the long run.

Local SEO in AI search – ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews
More and more local questions go straight to an AI – "which accounting firm in Västerås is good?" is put to ChatGPT or Gemini as often as to Google. The AI services base their answers on the same signals local SEO has always relied on: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent NAP data, genuine reviews and clear content about what the business does and where.
When the information is contradictory or incomplete, the AI rarely answers "I don't know" – it would rather leave the business out and recommend one it is sure of. The groundwork above therefore decides not only your position in the Local Pack, but whether you appear in AI answers at all. We explain how to work on local visibility in AI search in the section on AI search in the local SEO guide.
What does local SEO cost?
In Sweden, local SEO work is normally at the lower end of what SEO agencies charge – often around SEK 8,000–12,000 a month – because the competition is geographically limited and the work more focused than nationwide SEO. Smaller one-off projects, such as optimising a Google Business Profile along with a NAP audit, cost considerably less.

Local SEO agency – when should you get help?
You can learn local SEO and do it yourself, but it takes time and consistency. A local SEO agency is the right choice when:
- Competition in your area is tough – In densely populated cities with many competitors in your industry, basic optimisation is not enough. You then need systematic work on reviews, link building and local content.
- You lack the time – Local SEO means keeping Google Business Profile up to date, actively managing reviews and producing new content. That is hard to prioritise when the core business needs your attention.
- You are not seeing results despite your own efforts – If you have done the basic optimisation but still do not show up in the Local Pack, there are probably technical or structural problems that need to be identified.
