UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) – what is it and why does it matter for AI commerce?
Definition
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard initiated by Google to make commercial information machine-readable and enable purchases, bookings and transactions directly through AI-driven interfaces.
What UCP solves – the N×N problem
In e-commerce today, an integration problem arises as soon as you want to sell through AI. If a retailer wants to sell through several AI platforms, search services and apps, it has to build a separate, custom integration with each of them. Many platforms times many retailers quickly becomes unmanageable – an N×N problem.
The Universal Commerce Protocol solves this with a shared language. The retailer describes its product range and purchase flows once, in a standardised way, and becomes available to every agent that speaks UCP.
What UCP can do
The standard defines a number of capabilities that together cover the shopping journey:
- Product discovery – agents can fetch current product data, variants, stock and price.
- Basket – add products to a basket.
- Checkout – initiate and complete the purchase.
- Identity – link the user to the retailer securely.
- Order management – track the order after purchase.
UCP can be used through ordinary APIs, through Agent2Agent (A2A) or through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and builds on structured data and Google's Shopping Graph.
UCP and ACP – two sides of agentic commerce
UCP was launched in January 2026 by Google and Shopify, with Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart as co-founders and around twenty supporting companies, according to Google. Since May 2026, agentic purchases have been live with selected US retailers – no timetable for Europe has been announced yet.
UCP is easily confused with ACP, the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The difference in brief: ACP, run by OpenAI, is optimised for a single agent and a polished checkout. UCP is platform-agnostic and built for a future with many different shopping agents.
They are not mutually exclusive – both point in the same direction: commerce is moving into AI interfaces.
What UCP means for SEO and AEO
UCP marks a shift from optimising for clicks to optimising for decisions. When an AI agent is the intermediary in the purchase, being visible in an answer is not enough – your product data has to be accurate, up to date and machine-readable enough for the agent to act on it.
A wrong price, unclear stock status or incomplete product information is then no longer just a UX problem – it is the reason the agent picks a competitor.
Our guide to agentic commerce covers what the protocols mean for online retailers in Sweden – and which groundwork already pays off today.
