The challenge

Technology that has to be explained before it can be sold

SeaPattern develops a complete solution with floating turbines that increase electricity output at existing hydropower stations, with no new dams. It is innovative technology, and it has to be explained well to audiences with varying levels of prior knowledge, such as engineers thinking about joining the company.

The website had to make the system understandable to them. It also had to work in Swedish, English and German, and go live on a tight deadline.

What we did

  1. The strategy came before the design

The project began with a workshop, where we decided who the website is for, which words should define the company and how it should come across: as a system supplier, not a turbine manufacturer.

We kept the logo and colours. The structure and the message are new, in a style that leans towards the German engineering tradition: performance and quality, with no grand claims.

  2. The technology explained in an animation

The system has four parts, and they are hard to photograph in a way that explains how they fit together. So the technology page shows an animated cross-section: the power station, the turbines downstream and the route out to the grid.

Visitors see the whole system first and can then explore each part.

  3. Three languages with their own URLs

English sits at the root, with Swedish and German each under their own path, and every page has a translated name in the URL.

The website was migrated from WordPress. The old URLs redirect to the new ones, so links and search results do not lead to an error page.

  4. Separate entry points for each audience

Each audience the strategy identified has its own entry point right on the homepage, and its own pages with exactly what it needs to know.

The result

The website is live in three languages and carries the company's message to the audiences the strategy identified.
