SEO consultant 2026: what the title means, what it costs – and how you know what you get

What is an SEO consultant? Someone with that title could be a freelancer who writes your copy and builds your links personally, an agency employee assigned to you as a contact person, a one-person agency or a contracted specialist. The title does not tell you what you get – the person, the set-up and the assignment do. This guide helps you decide what you actually need help with, then choose the right set-up, and finally test the skills, whatever it says on the business card.
What is an SEO consultant, and what do they do?
An SEO consultant works to make your website visible in Google and in AI answers. In practice the work consists of four parts, and a single consultant can cover all four or just some of them:
- Audit – technical SEO (indexing, speed, structure), content and link profile, often as a one-off piece of work.
- Plan and prioritisation – keyword research weighted by search intent, what will have the biggest impact first, with owners and a timeline.
- Execution – technical fixes, new and rewritten copy, link building. This is where most of the hours go, and where consultants differ most: many do it themselves, others leave it to you.
- Follow-up – Google Search Console, rankings, traffic and leads tied to business goals, month by month.
So always ask what is included before you compare prices: analysis and plan, or execution too? Two consultants with the same hourly rate can deliver entirely different things.
These days there is one more area to cover: AEO. A consultant who only looks at Google rankings misses how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews describe your company. An AI that lacks information about you does not say "I don't know". It says something else – often a competitor's name. That costs deals that never show up in any report.
Why the title "SEO consultant" does not tell you what you get
In Sweden, the word consultant covers four quite different things:
- Freelance consultant. One person, often senior, who sells their own time. Most do the whole job themselves – analysis, copy, technical work, links – and bring in subcontractors when needed.
- Consultant via an agency. The agency sells "a dedicated SEO consultant": your contact person, with a team behind them for content, technical work and link building. Sometimes the contact person does the analysis themselves; sometimes it is a sales role.
- One-person agency. A one-person company that works like a freelancer but presents itself as an agency, with fixed prices and monthly agreements.
- Contracted or employed specialist. "SEO consultant" is also a job title. Through a staffing agency or direct employment you get someone on site who does the work – and whom you need to manage.
We reviewed the ten highest-ranking pages for "seo konsult" (Swedish for "SEO consultant") in Sweden (September 2026). Almost all of them, freelancers and agencies alike, say they do the work themselves: writing, implementing, building links. Several state explicitly that they do the work rather than just make recommendations. The image of the consultant as a pure adviser rarely holds true. What differs is who does the work, how much capacity sits behind the person and how the assignment is scoped.
The takeaway for buyers: do not buy a title. Buy a clearly described deliverable, from a named person, in a set-up that suits you.
Need help with SEO? Start with what, not who
Many people start by asking "consultant or agency?". Start instead with what you need help with. Go through the four parts above and be honest about which ones you can handle yourselves:
- You have your own writers and a developer. Then you need analysis, a plan and quality assurance – often 8–20 hours a month from a senior person. You handle the execution yourselves.
- You have time to lead but nobody who writes or codes. Then you need someone who does the work, not just advises: a freelancer who does the whole job, or an agency with a team.
- You have neither time nor resources. Then you need a partner who takes responsibility for everything – strategy, content, technical work and link building – and reports against business goals. That is a typical agency assignment, whether or not your contact person is called a consultant.
- You need a one-off piece of work. A technical review, a second opinion on an agency's work, keyword research ahead of a new website or support during a platform switch. A fixed price per deliverable works well here, whichever set-up you choose.
If you have someone who can spend ten hours a week on execution, buying direction is enough. Otherwise you are buying capacity – and then it does not matter what the person is called, only that you know who does what.
Freelancer, consultant via an agency, agency team or your own employee – what differs in practice?
The skills can be just as good in all four set-ups. The difference is who does the work, how much capacity sits behind them, how you pay and what happens when the person is ill or leaves. The table sums it up.
Four types of SEO consultant in Sweden in 2026 – what differs in practice
| Criterion | Freelance consultant | Consultant via an agency | Agency with a team | Your own employee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | The person themselves, sometimes with subcontractors | The contact person and the team behind them | The team, with a project manager as your point of contact | Your employee – you lead the work |
| Capacity behind them | One person: limited, but flexible | The agency's technical, content and link specialists | Largest – several disciplines at once | One person, plus what you buy in |
| Pricing model | Hourly rate SEK 800–2,000 or fixed price per deliverable | Monthly agreement, often SEK 10,000–50,000 | Monthly agreement, often SEK 10,000–50,000 | Salary plus tools |
| Best when | A clearly scoped assignment, or you have someone in-house to implement | You want one person with breadth behind them | You have no in-house resources | SEO is core to the business |
| Biggest risk | Vulnerable if the person falls ill or leaves | The contact person sells, someone else does the work | Activity rather than results | A skills ceiling and working in isolation |
The most common trap is buying one layer and thinking you have bought SEO. A copywriter who writes without keyword research, or a developer who fixes technical issues without a content plan, delivers a third of the job. That applies to all four set-ups – and it is why "cheapest per hour" is rarely cheapest overall. Ask who covers the technical side, content and authority, and who ties them together.
What does an SEO consultant cost in 2026?
According to openly published Swedish price guides, an SEO consultant in Sweden charges roughly SEK 800–2,000 an hour, and the spread reflects the set-up and seniority rather than the title. Swivrr's price guide gives SEK 800–1,400 per hour at standard level and SEK 1,400–2,000 per hour for senior consultants, while Haien gives SEK 900–1,800 per hour. Swedish agencies that publish their prices openly, such as Topdog, charge SEK 1,200–1,800 per hour and offer scoped projects at a fixed price of SEK 30,000–50,000 (prices as of September 2026).
A worked example: ten hours a month at SEK 1,500 comes to SEK 15,000 a month. If you are buying direction, that is roughly what a smaller agency set-up costs, but the money goes on analysis and prioritisation – you supply the execution with your own hours. If the consultant is also doing the work, ten hours is rarely enough; then it is better to think in deliverables than in hours.
That is why many consultants work at a fixed price per deliverable. According to the same price guides, a technical audit costs SEK 10,000–50,000 depending on the size of the website, and keyword research with a strategy costs from around SEK 3,000–8,000 for a smaller website. A fixed price is usually preferable for one-off work: you know what you get before you pay.
We cover monthly levels for ongoing set-ups, pricing models and what an agreement should include in What does an SEO agency cost in 2026?. The same lower limit applies whatever the set-up: below roughly SEK 5,000 a month, there is rarely enough time to move rankings in a competitive niche. In that case, a one-off audit plus your own work is a better use of the money.
What should an SEO consultant deliver in the first 90 days?
The first quarter decides whether the collaboration works, whatever the set-up. This is what a reasonable delivery plan looks like:
- Days 1–30: current state. Technical audit, keyword research, an overview of the competition and goals tied to the business – leads, bookings or sales. The consultant should have access to Google Search Console and your web analytics from the first week.
- Days 31–60: plan and first actions. A prioritised action list with owners and a timeline. Technical fixes commissioned or completed, a content plan with writing briefs ready, and tracking set up.
- Days 61–90: execution and first report. The first content published, technical fixes verified and a report showing what has been done, what has changed and what the next step is.
Do not expect business results in 90 days. Early signals – more indexed pages, movement on narrower search terms, AI answers starting to mention you – come within 3–6 months. Clear business results usually take 6–12 months depending on competition and starting point. We describe what a thorough plan looks like in SEO strategy 2026.
Make sure the deliverables are documented and belong to you. The keyword research, the action list and the writing briefs should live in your systems, not the consultant's. If you change supplier, the work should be able to continue without starting over.
Eight questions to ask before you hire an SEO consultant
- What results have you achieved – and what was the business impact? Ask for a case study with figures for leads or revenue.
- Do you do the work yourself, or do you use subcontractors? If so, for which parts? The answer determines what you need to resource yourselves and who you are actually paying for.
- How do you work across the technical side, content and authority? A consultant who has mastered only one of these layers should be able to say which – and who handles the rest.
- How do ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews describe us today – and how do we change that? A consultant who cannot answer has not looked at AEO.
- What do we measure, and how often do you report? The report should be tied to business goals, not stop at a list of rankings.
- What does it cost per month – and what is not included? Content production, link building and development are often extra.
- Who owns the accounts, data and content if we end the agreement? The right answer is always you.
- What do you say no to? A serious consultant deprioritises work you do not need yet.
Question four reveals the most. Answering it takes business understanding (what a buyer needs to know about you), copy that AI wants to cite, a strategy that builds topical authority and technical work that structures the content for machines. Technical work alone produces no citable answers, and copy alone does not make content machine-readable. Red flags in an SEO consultant
End the conversation if you see any of the following:
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody can promise a position in Google, and anyone who does is better at selling than at delivering.
- "Secret methods". Serious SEO can be explained. What cannot be explained is usually bought links or unedited, mass-produced AI content – and it backfires. How, and what it costs to recover, is covered in the guide to Google penalties.
- Reports that only show rankings. Rankings without traffic and leads say nothing about the business.
- Wants to own your accounts or your domain. Search Console, web analytics, ad accounts and the domain should be in your name.
- A long lock-in with no review point. A reasonable agreement can be ended with 1–3 months' notice; see the section on SEO agreements for what else it should include.
- No questions about your business. A consultant who does not ask how you make money will optimise for the wrong keywords.
Does the SEO consultant have to be in the same city as you?
Many people search for an SEO consultant in their own city. That is rarely necessary. The work targets Google and AI services and needs no face-to-face meetings – most consultants work remotely, with check-ins over video. Choose on skills and understanding of your industry. If the consultant understands how your buyers search, it shows in the keyword research.
The exception is local SEO. If you run a business that needs to show up in Google Maps and local searches, the consultant needs to know local SEO – but does not need to live there. A simple test: ask for an example of Google Business Profile work and a local landing page the consultant has built, and ask how the results were measured. We describe that work step by step in Local SEO 2026 – the complete guide.
How SEOS Design works – consultant and agency in the same person
With us, the difference between consultant and agency is small: you work directly with a senior consultant who does the analysis and writes the plan themselves – and the same person drives the execution, with technical, content and AEO capacity behind them. There is no lock-in period. Data, accounts and content are yours from day one.
Most things in SEO and AEO can be bought piece by piece, from any of the set-ups above. We sell the whole package – and hold it together. That is how we work with SEO and AEO, whatever you choose to call the role.
Unsure what you need help with, or whether you need to buy direction or capacity? Get in touch and we will tell you which – even if the answer is that you can manage it yourselves.
Common questions about SEO consultants
What does an SEO consultant do?
An SEO consultant works to make a website visible in Google and in AI answers. The work covers an audit of the technical side, content and links; a prioritised plan based on keyword research; execution (fixes, copy, link building); and follow-up against business goals. How much of the execution the consultant handles varies – most freelancers and agency consultants do it themselves, while some work purely as advisers. Always ask what is included before you compare prices.
Is an SEO consultant the same as an SEO agency?
It can be. "SEO consultant" is a title used by freelancers, one-person agencies, agency employees and contracted specialists – and agencies often sell "a dedicated SEO consultant" as the contact person for a team. The difference between these set-ups lies in who does the work, how much capacity sits behind the person and how you pay. Ask for a clearly described deliverable from a named person, rather than choosing on the words consultant or agency.
How much does an SEO consultant cost per hour in Sweden?
An SEO consultant in Sweden usually costs SEK 800–2,000 per hour in 2026. Standard rates are around SEK 800–1,400 per hour and senior consultants charge SEK 1,400–2,000 per hour, according to published Swedish price guides from Swivrr and Haien. Many consultants prefer to work at a fixed price per deliverable, for example SEK 10,000–50,000 for a technical audit depending on the size of the website.
How many hours a month of SEO consultancy do we need?
If you are buying direction – analysis, prioritisation and quality assurance – 8–20 hours a month is often enough, provided you have your own people to write and implement. A common set-up is 10 hours a month, around SEK 15,000 at SEK 1,500 an hour. If the consultant is also going to do the work, that is rarely enough. A monthly agreement is then often a better fit, with the work following a plan that is re-prioritised according to what is having an effect.
Is an SEO consultant enough for a smaller company?
Usually, yes – provided the consultant covers what you need. If you have someone who can spend around ten hours a week on execution, a consultant who gives direction is enough. If you have no time at all, you need a consultant who also does the work, or a fixed-price project with a clear deliverable. What matters is that someone covers the technical side, content and authority – whether they are called a consultant or an agency.
What should an SEO consultant deliver in the first 90 days?
The first 30 days: an audit of the technical side, keywords and competitors, plus goals tied to the business. Days 31–60: a prioritised action plan with owners, the first technical fixes and a content plan. Days 61–90: the first content published, the fixes verified and a report showing what has been done and what happens next. Early signals usually show within 3–6 months; clear business results usually take 6–12 months.
Does our SEO consultant need to be based near us?
No. SEO work targets Google and AI services and needs no face-to-face meetings, so geographical proximity matters little. Whether you are looking for help in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Uppsala or anywhere else, choose on skills and how well the consultant understands your business – not on postcode. Local SEO as a discipline (showing up on Google Maps and in local searches) is not the same thing as having a supplier in your city.
Who is the best SEO consultant in Sweden?
There is no objective list of Sweden's best SEO consultants. The rankings doing the rounds are usually compiled by the agencies themselves. Assess four things instead: documented results with business impact, understanding of your industry, whether the consultant covers the technical side, content and authority, and how they work with AI visibility (AEO). Also insist that you own the data, accounts and content. The best consultant for you is the one who says no to work you do not need yet.
